The Long Table and London's night markets

Big Apple hot dogs @ The Long Table: condiments a-go go

Happy 2012 everyone! It's good to be back on the blog after a festive break for mince pie-baking, baby nephew-cuddling and committed Quality Street-snarfing.

First up this year? I've written a piece for Futurespace about London's budding night market scene, featuring The Long Table in Dalston, The StockMKT in Bermondsey and Ms Marmite Lover's brilliant Underground Night Market in her Kilburn back garden. I'm going to stick my neck out and call this one as a big trend for 2012. Skip on over here to have a read of the article.

Have you been to any of London's night markets yet? Were you impressed?

I had such a great time with my stall at both of these. At The Long Table I met lots of people just like me, i.e. types that might not usually go out in Dalston on a Friday night, who absolutely loved it -and this was in the finger-numbing depths of winter! It's all about night markets. They're definitely the future

Interesting article. On the night I went to StockMkt in Bermondsey Sq though, my friends and I were hugely disappointed - there were a few stalls selling mostly junk and what looked like cheap, mediocre, unappetising fast food. We ended up eating at a nearby restaurant. The Long Table sounds much more impressive though - I've put it on my 'must visit' list. Gilgamesh in Camden started a weekly, south-east Asian food night market a couple of years back, but I don't know whether it's still going.

GG - yes, can't wait to see what they're like in the summer month.

Sejal - thanks for your comment. I think StockMKT has great potential for the Bermondsey so I'm keen to see how it develops, but yes - mixed quality is an issue. I think there will be a few teething problems for night markets along the way with council licences, queues etc (which proved the death of Red Market), but I'm excited to see them take off. Will check out the Gilgamesh thing, thanks.

Great read, I think you really captured the atmosphere of the Long Table. The stew from Moro was excellent! The quality elsewhere was a bit variable, but then there was a mixture of restaurant experts, street vendors and new ventures - nearly all of whom were worth a try.

ooh, have been hearing quite abit about these night markets but haven't given any of them a go yet. I grew up in asia where night markets were more the norm than day ones, but since comign here, have forgotten how fun they are. Thanks for the heads up!

I hope these catch on in London. Night markets are so popular in Asia that it makes sense that in a big city like London they should work.
